Rating of Belarusian meat processors 2020: coronavirus and favorable conditions on the Russian market contributed to the growth of sausage production

In 2020, Belarusian meat processors managed to increase the production of sausages and smoked meats due to the growth of domestic demand amid the coronavirus epidemic, as well as due to the favorable conjuncture of the Russian market.

According to Belstat, by the end of 2020 (statistics for the 4th quarter), the consumption of meat and meat products reached 6.8 kg per month per household member. For comparison: a year earlier this figure was 6.5 kg.

At the same time, statistics do not consider consumption in public catering facilities. And in 2020, against the backdrop of the epidemic, the population significantly reduced eating outside the home, compensating for it by buying products, including meat, in retail outlets.

Consumption of finished products grew faster than that of raw meat, as consumers are still unwilling to spend more time preparing food after changing their lifestyle. The acceleration of the pace of life has gradually shifted the demand in the meat group to sausages, smoked meats, canned meat and semi-finished products. The epidemic has only accelerated this process.

Thus, retail sales of meat products in 2020 increased by 3.9% to 328.3 thousand tons, while total sales of meat, poultry and offal increased by less than 1%. Moreover, among the main types of meat, only pork consumption increased (+4.3% to 82.1 thousand tons), while sales of beef (-14.4% to 8.9 thousand tons) and poultry (-0.3% to 146.7 thousand tons) demonstrated a decrease.


In the third quarter, the demand for meat products was strengthened by the fact that many consumers were forced to refuse from overseas vacations, preferring them to countryside cabin rest or picnics. This spurred demand in the barbecue and grill group.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the growth rate of sales of meat products decreased during the year. But at the end of the year, the share of meat products in the total meat consumption reached 54%, which is the maximum over the past 5 years.


The statistics were partially corrected by the closed borders factor. For example, the only region where retail sales of meat products decreased in 2020 was the Gomel region, where a part of the demand was previously formed by the Russians arriving to Belarus. Sales of meat products increased slightly (by 1.8%) in the Mogilev region. At the same time, higher growth was recorded in the western regions of the country.

Also, the activity of the meat processing plants was influenced by the steady demand from Russia against the background of the relatively loyal policy of the Russian supervisory authority. As a result, the total export of sausages in 2020 increased by almost a quarter to 33.7 thousand tons, the one of ready-made or canned meat products increased by 16.2% to 19.5 thousand tons.

Despite the fact that a number of interviewed producers noted that consumer behavior tends to be more economical (especially during the first wave of coronavirus and in the last months of the year), these factors allowed meat processing enterprises to increase the production of sausages by 1.6%, and the one of finished products, primarily smoked meats and canned food – by 6.4%.

This result in the sausage group was achieved mainly due to the growth in the production of boiled and boiled-smoked sausages. At the same time, the production of smoked products decreased.

A third of all sausages are produced in the Brest region and almost 23% in the Grodno region. At the same time, the five largest producers include three companies from the Grodno region.

In the structure of production of finished meat products, almost 40% occupy the boiled group. And in the structure of sausage production finished meat products occupy about 58%. Over the year, Belarusian enterprises have increased the production of such products by 2.7%.


The regional structure practically did not change during the year. It should be noted that in the Minsk region the Dzerzhinsk Multi-Unit Agricultural Enterprise entered the Top-5 regional leaders.

About 9% in the structure of finished products production and 13% in the structure of sausage production is occupied by boiled smoked sausages – the fastest growing segment of the market. In 2020, the production of such sausages increased by 6.7%.

Over the last quarter, the five leaders in the production of boiled smoked products have changed insignificantly: it includes Inko-Food. Compared to the results for 2019, we should note the improvement in the positions of the FLLC "Belovezhskie Delicatesy" in the Brest region and the Bobruisk Meat Processing Plant in the Mogilev region.

Raw smoked and dry-cured sausages occupy about 7% in the structure of sausage production, or about 5% in the total structure of finished meat products. Compared to 2019, the production of uncooked raw smoked and dry-cured sausages slightly decreased (-0.2%).

Compared to 2019, Borisov Meat Processing Plant No. 1 has worsened its position in the nationwide rating of producers. In the Vitebsk region, we should note the leadership of the Slavyansky Meat Processing Plant, in the Gomel region, CJSC “Partner and K” entered the top three.

The production of semi-smoked sausages in 2020 decreased by 4.8% after falling a year earlier. Although, globally, this did not affect the share of this type of sausages in the portfolio of meat processors (about 6% in the total production of sausages and about 4% in the total structure of meat products).

In the regional structure of production, compared to 2019, there have been slight changes. In the Brest region, Inko-Food entered the top three largest producers, and in the Minsk region – the Stolbtsy Meat-Packing Plant.

Blood and offal sausages, jellies, aspics, brawn and other products occupy about 10% in the structure of sausage production. The production of sausages from pulp food by-products and animal blood (3% in the total production of sausages and approximately 2% in the total volume of finished products) decreased for the second year in a row – in 2020 by 1.2%.

The regional structure of production is quite stable. Compared to the results of work in 2019, the Vitebsk Meat Processing Plant has worsened its position in the Top 5. In the regional ratings, the top three are the Glubokoye Meat Processing Plant in the Vitebsk region and the Stolbtsy Meat Packing Plant in the Minsk region.

Dumplings

Due to the peculiarities of consumption, the domestic dumplings market is quite stable, and exports are insignificant. Nevertheless, in 2020, producers managed to increase production of these products by 3.4% after growing by 5.7% a year earlier. Regional analysis shows that large producers are able to increase volumes, while small ones are losing ground. This applies, first of all, to the Brest Meat Processing Plant, which following the results of the year occupied the first line in terms of the volume of dumplings production.
